In the present era, driving has become an integral part of our daily lives. Driving is not just a mechanical process but a responsibility. When we take the steering wheel after reciting Dua, our connection with Allah is established and Allah protects us from accidents during the journey.
Allah Almighty has taught us, through His Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the supplications and manners for every occasion. Driving or traveling is not just about moving from one place to another, but it is about using the blessings (rides and roads) given by Allah, for which gratitude and caution are required.
Humans migrate from one place to another for food, knowledge, and trade. In ancient times, this journey was made on camels, horses, and mules. While in today’s modern era, high-speed cars, airplanes, and ships have overcome the distances.
Dua for Traveling
A journey, whether short or long, should begin with the remembrance of Allah. Driving responsibly, respecting traffic rules, and remembering Allah is the way of a believer. Remember that your slightest carelessness can be dangerous not only for you but also for others.
Starting a journey with the name of Allah not only brings peace of mind but also puts us in the protection and safety of Allah. The following are Sunnah supplications and some essential instructions for safe driving and travel:
When you sit in your car and are ready to start, the Sunnah is to say Bismillah (In the name of Allah) and then recite this verse from the Quran (Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14):
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Transliteration: Subhan-alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqalibun.
Translation: “Glory to Him who has brought this (vehicle) under our control, though we were unable to control it (ourselves), and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.”

The most amazing part of this dua is the last sentence:
وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
And indeed, to our Lord is our return.”
Usually, in times of joy and excitement, we forget our destination. This verse reminds us that this worldly journey is temporary and the journey of life is also coming to an end.
As we change from one vehicle to another, so too will the soul one day pass from the body to another world. The real destination is not a city or a country, but the pleasure of Allah and Paradise.
Important Tips for Driving and Safety
Taking precautionary measures is a requirement of the Sunnah of the Prophet and common sense.
- Before starting a journey, be sure to check the air in the tires, engine oil, water, and brakes.
- Using a seat belt is the most important step for your safety. It is mandatory to fasten it before driving.
- Using a mobile phone while driving is the biggest cause of accidents. If a call is necessary, stop the car on the side.
- Going slowly is safe and rushing is the work of the devil. “Always drive within the prescribed speed.
- Always keep a reasonable distance from the vehicle in front so that you have time to brake in an emergency.
- If you are feeling sleepy or very tired, do not drive at all, but rather rest for a while.
Write this dua on the dashboard of your car and stick it so that you and those sitting with you are reminded. May Allah Almighty make our journey easy and safe. Amen.
Keep reciting Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar while traveling. This not only keeps you in the remembrance of Allah, but also keeps you focused and prevents boredom or road rage.
May Allah Almighty keep us all in His protection and make all our journeys easy and blessed. (Amen)
