There are several authentic duas and adhkar recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) immediately after finishing the obligatory prayer.
Below is the first and most common sequence of supplications:
1- It is Sunnah to recite this dhikr immediately after the greeting and saying Istighfar (Astaghfirullah ) three times in prayer:
أَسْتَغْفِرُ الله (ثَلَاثًا)
Astaghfirullah (3 times)
“I seek the forgiveness of Allah.”
Key points of the hadith:
- This dua should be recited after the greeting.
- Imam Awza’i was asked, “How should one seek forgiveness?” He said, “Just say, ‘Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah.'”
- Istaghfar after prayer is an admission that we are unable to fulfill the right to this great act of worship. Another benefit of asking for forgiveness is that if there is any omission in prayer, Allah Almighty will forgive it.

2- Immediately following the Istighfar, it is Sunnah to say:
Hazrat Thawban (who was a freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ) narrates:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he would seek forgiveness (saying ‘Astaghfirullah’) three times and then recite this dua: (Sahih Muslim: 591)
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
Allahumma Antas-Salamu wa minkas-salamu, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram.
“O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor.”
These words, which are recited immediately after prayer, are very comprehensive in their meaning and virtue.
