When facing difficulties, there are several powerful duas from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that address feelings of distress, anxiety, and seemingly impossible obstacles.
Here are some of the most recommended duas for overcoming problems:
1. The Dua of Prophet Yunus (AS)
This is considered one of the most powerful dua for when you feel “trapped” or overwhelmed by a situation. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that no Muslim supplicates with it for anything but that Allah answers him.
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Transliteration: La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.
Translation: “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” — (Quran 21:87)
2. Dua For General Distress and Anxiety
This dua is one of the favorite supplications of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). It is narrated in the hadiths that whenever he (ﷺ) faced a difficult matter or difficulty, he (ﷺ) would repeat these words with great humility. It is also called “Du’a-e-Karb” (dua to remove distress).
يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ
Transliteration: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astagheeth.
Translation: “O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek help.” — (Tirmidhi)
If you are suffering from mental stress, anxiety, or a seemingly impossible problem, reciting this dua frequently provides peace of mind and God’s unseen help in the matter.
3. Dua For Easing a Difficult Task
If you are facing a specific problem that feels too hard to handle (like a work issue, exam, or tough conversation), use this:
اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلًا
Transliteration: Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahlan, wa anta taj’alul-hazna idha shi’ta sahlan.
Translation: “O Allah, there is no ease except in what You have made easy, and You make the difficulty easy if You wish.” — (Ibn Hibban)
4. Dua For Relief from Worry and Debt
The Prophet (ﷺ) once entered the mosque and saw a man named Abu Umamah looking distressed. He taught him a prayer to recite every morning and evening to remove his worries and his debts.
Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men.” — (Sahih Bukhari)
How to Make These Duas Effective
If you want these supplications, proven from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ), to have a miraculous effect in your life, it is important to adopt the following manners and methods:
1. Presence of Heart (Ikhlas)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Supplicate to Allah with full certainty that He will accept your supplication.” (Tirmidhi)
When you supplicate, do not think, “Is this possible?” Rather, think, “Nothing is impossible for Allah.” A supplication made with doubt is not accepted.
2. Praise and glorification of Allah
Always begin your supplication with beautiful praise of Allah. Call upon Him by His Attributes (such as Ya Hayyyu, Ya Qayyum, Ya Dhul-Jalal, Wa-Ikram). When a servant praises Allah, Allah does not delay in rewarding him.
3. Certainty of Response (Yaqin)
You must pray with the mindset that the answer is already on its way. The “impossibility” of the obstacle is a human perception. To Allah, the word is simply “Be” (Kun), and it is.
4. Reciting Durood Sharif at the Beginning and End
The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that Dua is suspended between the heavens and the earth until the person sends blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ). Starting and ending your supplication with Allahumma Salli ‘ala Muhammad acts as a vehicle for your prayer.
5. Persistence (Al-Ilhah)
Allah loves those who are persistent in prayer. Do not say, “I prayed and I wasn’t answered.” The “delay” is often a period of spiritual growth or a way for Allah to avert a greater evil you aren’t aware of.
6. Halal provision
A halal morsel has a great influence on the acceptance of supplication. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned a person who comes from a long journey, is covered in dust and raises his hands in supplication, but his food, drink and clothing are of haraam origin, so how can his supplication be accepted in such a case?
7- Asking forgiveness
Sometimes our sins become obstacles in the way of our prayers. Before starting the prayer, seek forgiveness frequently (Astaghfirullah). When a person confesses his sins and repents, Allah Almighty opens the doors of mercy for him.
Summary: The best way to pray
- After performing ablution, sit facing the Qibla.
- First, praise Allah.
- Recite Durood Sharif on the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
- Ask forgiveness for your sins (Istighfar).
- Present your need with complete humility, tears, and conviction.
- Finally, end your prayer by reciting Durood Sharif again.
By internalizing these Sunnah supplications, the believer transforms their relationship with hardship. These are not just words for the tongue; they are shields for the heart and light for the path ahead.
