Hadith About the Recitation of “Allahumma Ajirni Minan Nar”

The Prophet () has explained the importance of this dua.

It was narrated from Muslim bin Harith Tamimi (RA) that the Messenger of Allah () said:
“When you finish the Fajr prayer, say seven times before speaking to anyone, ‘Allahumma ajrni min al-naar’. If you die that day, Allah will write down for you refuge from the Fire. And when you pray the Maghrib prayer, say the same seven times before speaking to anyone, if you die that night, Allah will write down for you refuge from the Fire.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

This blessed Hadith reveals some important things about the virtue of this supplication:

  • It is recommended to recite this dua 7 times in particular.
  • Reciting it immediately after the Fajr and Maghrib prayers, that is, before engaging in worldly matters, is more virtuous.
  • This dua becomes a shield between the servant and the fire of Hell. If death occurs during this day or night, these words become a means of forgiveness and salvation.
  • Although this dua is very short, its reward is very great, which shows how merciful Allah Almighty is to His servants that He has given such great good news for a small act of worship.

Best Times for Recitation

In the light of blessed hadiths, the best time to recite it is as follows:

After Fajr Prayer: It is Sunnah to recite this supplication 7 times immediately after the Fajr prayer, before talking to anyone. The Prophet () said that if a person recites it after Fajr and dies on the same day, Allah will write for him salvation from Hell.
After Maghrib Prayer: Similarly, it is recommended to recite it 7 times after Maghrib prayer, before engaging in worldly conversation. If a person recites it after Maghrib and dies that night, he is protected from the punishment of Hell.
