Friday (Jummah) Special Duas

“Friday is a weekly opportunity to seek forgiveness for sins and strengthen our relationship with Allah.”

Friday holds a special significance and spiritual significance in Islam. For Muslims, this day is like the day of Eid. On this day, men take a bath, wear clean clothes and apply perfume and go to the mosques for Friday prayers.

Recitation of the Holy Quran, especially Surah Al-Kahf, and sending blessings and peace upon the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) are among the important rituals of this day. A special hour on Friday is famous for the acceptance of prayers, which is why every Muslim hopes for the mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty on this day.

The special virtues of Friday

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On that day Hazrat Adam (AS) was born, on that day he was admitted to Paradise, on that day he was expelled from it, and the Day of Judgment will be established on Friday.” (Sahih Muslim)

A person bathes on Friday. He applies perfume. He performs Friday prayers with peace of mind. His minor sins between the two Fridays are forgiven.

There is a time on Friday when prayers are accepted, when a person sincerely calls upon Allah, and Allah accepts his prayer. According to scholars, this time is from the beginning of the sermon to the end of the prayer, or shortly before sunset.

Friday Duas

Here are the most recommended duas and practices to observe this Friday:

1. Sayyidul Istighfar (Dua for Forgiveness)

Sayyid al-Istighfar is the most excellent and comprehensive prayer among all the words of repentance and seeking forgiveness.

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Transliteration: Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika ma istata’tu, a’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, aboo’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa aboo’u bidhanbi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfiru ad-dhunooba illa anta.

Translation: “O Allah, You are my Lord. You created me, and I am Your slave. I will remain faithful to Your covenant and promise as much as possible. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I admit my sin. So, forgive me. Indeed, none can forgive sins but You”

2. Salawat (Sending Blessings on the Prophet ﷺ)

Friday is a blessed day to send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). According to Islamic traditions, there is a special virtue in sending abundant blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ) on this day.

االلَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Transliteration: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammad.

Translation: O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad.

3. Dua for Protection from Trials

Reciting the first and last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf provides protection from the Dajjal (Antichrist) and illuminates a light for the believer from one Friday to the next.

4. Seeking Forgiveness (Istighfar)

The meaning of the Prophetic Hadith (ﷺ) is that whoever makes it obligatory upon himself to seek forgiveness, Allah will provide him with a way out of every difficulty and provide him with sustenance from where he cannot even imagine.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullahal-ladhi la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh.

Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal, and I repent to Him.

5. Comprehensive Quranic Dua

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Translation: “Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

6. Dua for “Noor” (Light)

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي لِسَانِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا

Transliteration: Allahummaj’al fi qalbi nuran wa fi lisani nuran wa fi basari nuran wa fi sam’i nuran.

Translation: O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my sight, and light in my hearing.

7. Dua for Sustenance (Rizq)

اَللّٰهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Transliteration: Allahummak-fini bi-halalika ‘an haramika, wa-aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwak.

Translation: O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful instead of what is forbidden, and make me independent of all others through Your grace.

8. Dua for Forgiveness for Parents and Believers

Friday is a day of gathering (Jumu’ah), making it an ideal time to pray for the entire community.

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Transliteration: Rabbana-ghfir li wa liwalidayya wa lil-mu’minina yawma yaqumul-hisab.

Translation: “Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.”

9. Dua for Barakah (Provision and Knowledge)

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan.

Translation: O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and deeds that are accepted.

10.Seeking Protection from Hardship

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasal, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa dala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

Translation: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men.”

Recommended Sunnahs for Jummah

Here are some specific Friday etiquette and traditions, which are a source of happiness for every Muslim:

  • Taking a bath on Friday is a permanent Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). It has been strongly emphasized in the blessed hadiths. In one narration, he (ﷺ) said: “It is obligatory (in the order of obligation) for every adult person to take a bath on Friday.” (Sahih Bukhari).
  • Trimming nails, brushing teeth, wearing clean or new clothes, and applying perfume are Sunnahs.
  • The one who arrives early at the mosque receives a great reward. A hadith states about Friday prayers that whoever reaches the mosque in the first hour will receive the reward of sacrificing a camel, the second will receive the reward of giving a cow, the third will receive the reward of giving a ram, the fourth will receive the reward of giving a chicken in charity, and the fifth will receive the reward of giving an egg.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will be lit for him between two Fridays.” (Sunan An-Nasa’i, Mustadrak Al-Hakim)
  • The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Send abundant Durood upon me on Friday, for your Durood is presented to me.”
  • When the Imam is delivering the sermon, it is important to listen to the sermon with full attention. Talking to anyone else is strictly prohibited.

Friday is a special gift from Allah Almighty to the Ummah of Muhammad.. This day is the best opportunity to wake up from heedlessness, repent and strengthen our relationship with our Creator. We should cherish this day, leave worldly affairs behind and engage in the remembrance of Allah and fill our laps with the blessings of this great day.
